A crowd funding campaign through the Sustainable Business Network’s Million Metres programme was run to raise funds for the Ōtara Waterways and Lake Trust's Adopt a Spot Programme. This campaign closed on 28th February 2018 and raised $33,875.25, with an initial funding target of $31,500.

The money raised enabled the Trust to plant 3,100 trees in the Ōtara Creek Reserve in the 2018 winter planting season, as well engage the Adopt a Spot Ambassador and Coordinator to help drive the Adopt a Spot programme and community engagement.

A community planting day was held on Saturday 9 June 2018 in the Ōtara Creek Reserve to plant many of the trees funded through the Million Metres programme.
