Restoration outside the catchment

The Trust’s knowledge, influence and impact in stream restoration is recognised through our leadership in projects outside the Ōtara catchment. These projects allow us to share our expertise and strengthen our ecological and community connection in the surrounding areas.

Māngere Waterways Programme

Since 2022, with the support of the Māngere-Ōtāhuhu Local Board, we have assisted stream restoration and community action along the Harania and Te Ararata streams in Māngere. This work is enhancing waterways through ongoing weed control, replanting native species and rubbish removal, preserving threatened īnanga (whitebait) at known spawning sites.

Botany Creek Restoration Project

Since 2024, with the support of Howick Local Board, we have led community initiatives to protect remaining habitats for native kōura (freshwater crayfish) and banded kōkopu along the Botany Creek in Kilkenny Park. These freshwater crayfish are a taonga and a sign of a healthy ecosystem.

Tāmaki Estuary Restoration Project

Since 2025, with the support of the Howick Local Board, we have begun work on the north-eastern side of Highbrook Park to Stonedon Esplanade Reserve. We tackle weed infested vegetation, suppressing invasive gorse, blackberry, wattles, pampas and privet from re-emerging. We work alongside local businesses to revitalise biodiversity and habitats for coastal birds which once formed part of this important and dynamic ecosystem.
